Here’s a few ways to think in terms of not just red this holiday, but GREEN.

You don’t need to buy something to express your affection. Why not give that special person a hand-written certificate that’s redeemable for a favorite home-cooked meal, a week’s worth of running time-consuming errands, a massage, or similar.

Send an e-greeting or use re-cycled materials to create a card for the special people in your life. Additionally, consider helping your children do the same. Nearly a billion Valentine’s Day cards are purchased world-wide each year, second in number only to Christmas.

Choose flowers that are organically grown and / or locally. Fewer chemicals and less distance traveled are conducive to less negative impact on our environment.

If hosting a party, try to plan a menu that includes locally grown foods. Also, minimize the number of disposable plates, napkins and cups or opt for those made of recycled materials.

When the temperature outside makes its way downward, it’s always nice to sip a beverage that warms you from within. While some winter drinks are traditionally laden with fat and calories, you can readily adjust them, resulting in a tasty but healthy variation. It’s the ultimate in winter comfort, made and served up right at your desk.

Hot Cocoa

Why settle for a cup of powdered mix and water when you can have the real thing?  Simply microwave a cup of 2% or skim milk, add a packet (1 teaspoon) of Sugar in the Raw or similar and 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa. Stir well and enjoy.  For a spicier variation at home, add a dash of chili powder or a cinnamon stick or two.

Hot Apple Cider

Want to add some anti-oxidants to your day?  Warm some apple cider or apple juice and you’re on your way. Apple cider does have more nutrients per ounce than its more processed counterpart but both have nutritional value. Heat a cup of either in the microwave, then add a cinnamon stick  or a bit of cinnamon flavored syrup.

Spicy Tea

The jury is still out relative to the health benefits of tea but some studies have supported they are there. Whichever, it remains a favorite of many. Prepare tea per usual then add a packet ( 1 teaspoon ) of sugar and a couple of lemon slices. Alternatively, add a cinnamon stick instead of the sugar. For a completely different taste, add cinnamon and cloves.

First, and perhaps foremost, don’t forget that in spite of the festive environment, you are essentially at work.  While it’s okay to relax and step down from a purely professional demeanor, don’t allow yourself to say or do things that might raise an eyebrow, or two, or three.

Don’t dress as you would for a night out at the club and remember to limit the number of alcoholic drinks you consume. You’re not apt to positively impress anyone once you’ve had a few too many and you risk damaging relationships that you’ve already established. Similarly, if you’ve been invited to bring a guest, choose that person carefully, eliminating the possibility that negative or inappropriate behavior might reflect back on you.

Instead, show up prepared to make the event work in your direction. Prepare a list of conversation topics that are relevant and that people might find interesting.  Similarly, ask questions that signal that you’re invested in your colleagues and work environment. Listen. You’re just as apt to make a favorable impression by being the audience as you are the entertainment.

As in any social situation that includes attendees that are not close friends or relatives, avoid topics of conversation that are potentially inflammatory. And, finally, don’t forget to express gratitude to your hosts. Someone spent money to stage the event and you owe them the courtesy of a personally extended thank you.
